Beyond zero waste: how event surplus creates community impact
Sustainable events shouldn't just minimise harm – they should actively create positive impact. At Outsourced Events, we're working towards transforming how we handle event surplus, turning potential waste into community resources.
Rethinking event surplus
Most events generate surplus. Despite careful planning, you'll have merchandise that wasn't distributed, catering that wasn't consumed and materials that weren't needed again. But surplus isn’t necessarily waste – it's just resources in the wrong place.
We work with Mind to turn surplus event merchandise into mental health support. Surplus merchandise is donated to Mind's retail operations across the UK, where they're sold to generate funds for mental health services, crisis helplines and support programs.
It's straightforward: our warehouse team sorts surplus merchandise and coordinates collection with Mind.
Surplus catering helping to tackle food poverty
Food surplus requires different handling, but the principle remains the same. Through our partnership with City Harvest London, untouched buffet items, unopened packaged foods and prepared meals that meet food safety standards are collected and delivered to homeless shelters, community centres, schools and food banks across London.
The impact is immediate and measurable. City Harvest estimates that 1kg of rescued food provides approximately 3 meals. Beyond feeding people in need, diverting food from landfill also reduces methane.
Making it work
Event surplus will always exist to some degree. The choice is whether it becomes waste or whether it becomes resources serving people and causes that need support. Because event sustainability isn't just about reducing waste – it's about creating lasting community impact.
